Introduction

Lycabettus is the highest point in Athens, about 270 metres above the city, near the Kolonaki district in the centre. Its summit holds the little chapel of St George and an open-air theatre, and it is a favourite spot to look over Athens, the Acropolis and out to the Saronic Gulf. You can climb on pine-shaded paths or take the funicular, entered through a tunnel on the Kolonaki side. Sunset and the city lights make the evening the best time, and there are a restaurant and café at the top. Allow about an hour, more if you walk up.
