Introduction
The Theatre of Epidaurus, in the Argolid region of the Peloponnese, is the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece and, with the Sanctuary of Asclepius, a World Heritage Site since 1988. Built in the fourth century BC into a hillside, its semicircular auditorium has dozens of tiers and once held around fourteen thousand people. Its acoustics are famous: a whisper at the centre of the stage can be heard in the top rows. Each summer it hosts performances of the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. Allow 1-2 hours, together with the sanctuary site.
